My Natural Hair Journey

I have been natural for eight plus years now. Unfortunately, I can’t recall the last time I had a relaxer to give you all an exact time period. Synergi Hair Salon in Columbus, Ohio, owned by Mrs. Karen Hill, is who helped me get on the natural hair journey. They have a Facebook group titled “Synergi Salon Journey to Natural” if you too need help along the transitional or maintaining phase of being natural. The tips I’ve learned from Mrs. Karen is:

DOs:

  • It’s okay to wash your hair more than once a week. (Living proof it doesn’t ruin “OUR” hair)

  • Get your ends trimmed/cut. On YouTube Mrs. Karen speaks about this under the YouTube Channel name Synergi Salon episode titled “How to grow out your relaxer”. Check it out for tips on cutting your ends.

DONTs:

  • Stop using 5 products to accomplish one style. Trial and error products until you find one product that helps accomplish one style. After so much product daily you definitely want to wash the product build up out.

  • Refrain from heat and chemicals as much as possible

Synergi has a variety of products for Natural Hair people (male/female). I used her products for years before moving. I also know of a young lady Jade that has a natural hair care line “The Love Line Natural Hair Care” I haven’t used just yet however, she has a pretty big following and good reviews.

My Journey

The first picture collage was my first “big chop”. The top picture was before the chop in 2012, the bottom picture was after the chop in 2012, the last picture was from 2018. I got the “big chop” because I went through a long phase of bleaching and dying my hair quite often. So the “big chop” was to cut off the damage hair from bleaching and dying my hair. When I lived in Columbus, Ohio I ALWAYS wore my hair straightened even after the big chop. I became a pro at getting my hair slick straight with the flat iron.

The second picture collage was my second “big chop” in February 2018. The top left picture was before the cut, the bottom left was after the cut straightened, the top right was after the cut curly and the last picture is 2020 curly. The purpose of this “big chop“ this time around was to cut off the damage hair from always straightening it so I could wear it curly. Now living in Houston, Texas I’ve wore my hair straight maybe three times my first year here in 2018. Then in 2019, I tried to straighten it and it was NO BUENO! I haven’t straightened it since. It’s been over a year since I’ve straightened my hair.

I personally, wash my hair just about every day if my hair isn’t styled in braids or a natural hair style, such as twist outs or a 2 day old wash and go. I haven’t been that great with keeping my ends cut and it’s showing, because my hair should definitely be much longer. I never use more than 3 different products at a time. I can’t quite budget either suggested hair care lines at the moment, so I’m still trying to determine my go to products.
